Rafał Kowalski
Rafał Kowalski was born in 1973 in Warsaw. In 1994-1999, he studied at the Painting Faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Since 1996, he has worked at the Painting Faculty of the Warsaw Academy. In 2008, he gained a doctoral degree in the field of fine arts, the discipline of fine arts.
He received a Scholarship of the Polish Cultural Foundation (2013) and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2014).
His speciality is painting, drawing and installations. In his work, he attaches great importance to tradition and its relation with presence. Focus, composition discipline and formal simplicity are the main means of expression which accompany topics taken from everyday life, often full of reference to collective memory or cultural symbols.
What is important in this art are repetitions, interferences, afterimages, while the ideology, hidden meanings and metaphors are less frequent. Prevailing elements direct our attention to abstraction; they liberate work of art from expression or narration coming from real scenes and situations visible on paintings.
